If you’ve recently discovered Mei Tai slings but haven’t yet had the opportunity for yourself, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about. Babywearing has become incredibly popular in the UK over the last few years, yet has been used across the world for centuries. This is because babywearing provides so many benefits to you and your baby, both physical and mental.

For starters, carrying your baby in a Mei Tai sling will really help their physical development. Being carried in a front or back carry will help your baby to develop stronger neck and shoulder muscles as well as having their legs free to practise ‘stepping’. In fact, some parents have found that babies carried in slings never crawl and instead progress straight to walking. As an adult, babies who are carried have been found to possess much better balance and physical agility.

Secondly, the close, skin-to-skin contact between you and your baby will have benefits for both of you. As you can imagine, it will help to foster an even stronger bond between you, leading to a much more settled, relaxed and confident baby. Not only will they cry less, but they will also be much happier when you leave them (For example, when starting nursery) as they are more confident in your bond, and this confidence can even continue into adult life. For the parent, babywearing has even been shown to help prevent post-natal depression as the contact between you stimulates the production of certain hormones.

Finally, a very important benefit is that babywearing will prevent a condition known as Flat Head Syndrome. Babies’ skulls are quite soft when they are born, and if constant pressure is put on them, they can become misshapen. This syndrome is often caused when babies spend large amounts of time in prams, pushchairs or car seats and requires almost constant wear of a special helmet to remedy which can be very expensive. Wearing your baby in a Mei Tai sling will eliminate the risk of this condition.

Oh, I should also mention that while your baby is in a sling, you’ll have both hands free to get on with household chores, cook, read a book or practise your favourite hobby… all while knowing exactly where your baby is and fostering that lovely bond between you both!

If you want some more details on the benefits of baby wearing, we really recommend checking to see if there is a sling library in your local area. Not only will these have slings for you to try out and practice with, but they will also be able to answer any questions you have. Simply search online for ‘sling library’ and your local area.
